Chronology of cameras Bernard Marks

This camera is one of the few (perhaps the only one) entirely Canadian cameras. There are certainly Canadian Kodaks, but it cannot be said that they are entirely Canadian, as most of the time they are just local productions of English or American models.

It is a technically very ordinary box, made of metal, but covered with a frosted, black-colored paint.

It seems that Bernard Marks was a reseller.

There are (at least) two models of Marksman. A careful examination reveals aesthetic differences, but especially a different marking on the front. On this specimen, it is indicated "Made in Canada for Bernard Marks and Co.," confirming the subcontracting thesis. On the other model, the marking is different: "Made in Canada by Bernard Marks and Co."

Some authors suggest that the manufacturer might be Jem, but Jem cameras have a taller silhouette, with a very different film winding key, and it seems unlikely that a manufacturer would have modified its production to such an extent for a small client.
